Advice...

MM. As someone who has been and at time still am in the same boat, the advice of light is highly valid.
I am including a shot of a powder horn that was my late father's.
I used a Besler 750 quartz studio light on it, and the detail that came out blew me away. The light is the key, along with (and this is my own personal opinion) shooting as slow as you can get.

I also shoot as much as possible and see what works and what doesnt. (Hail digital)

That being said, What made me a better photographer was working and learning with an emmy award winning news photographer who told me that the difference between good phoptography and award winning photography is the tripod :)
