I am looking for other lens mostly for out door swim meet. Already own 70-200 2.8 IS. Can not design between 300mm f4 and 400mm f5.6. Please advise. My camera is Canon 50D.

Thank you,

I've always found 300mm more than adequate for swimming; in fact most of the time the 70-200 is my go-to. That said, I would recommend the 2.8; that one stop can be essential when you want to freeze the diver coming off the board or a lane-end turn.

Thank you. Sorry I didn't mention my budget. My budget is $1,500. 2.8 is supper nice but at $6,000 is way to much for me.

The distance you will be from the action is what matters in making this decision. And because those distances are not always the same I have the 200 f2.8, 300 f2.8 & 400 f2.8 in my arsenal as well as the 70-200 f2.8. You need to figure out what the average working distance will be and go from there.

I have the 300 F/4 but now use the 100-400mm more but it is above your budget too. I would say 300. It's a good lens.

Another option is the 135mm F/2, really a good lens and the F/L may be about right for a pool.

The op has that focal length in his 70-200 f2.8.
You're right. Missed that. But I still like my 135 even though I have it covered in my 100-400. Once you get all the F/L covered you start to think about apertures. :)

I like mine to but redundancy is a waste in this case.

Thank you so much.

I have the 400 5.6 and have shot the 300 4. I would personally want the extra light over the increase in focal length. If you really need that 400 range put a TC on your 70-200.

I have owned the 400mm prime, the 300mm f/4 would be better for your situation but try a teleconverter on your 70-200
