AF-Assist beam/Red-eye reduction lamp

Been using a Canon 500N for years and while playing with some settings, the AF-Assist beam went on. The problem is I can't switch it off even if I set the camera setting to Off. Navigated thru Function menu and following the instructions, still w/o success.

When I plug in the battery, the ligth goes on automatically. It doesn't behave this way before. :?: Any tips? thanks!

Sounds like a malfunction. Go to the Canon website and email their customer service.

Would take the batteries out to set camera but to the default?

I actually remove the batteries in between shots to save on power and just put them back on when about to take a shot. :cry:
