AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR and AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III

I would love to reproduce those images with my DSLR and the 200-500mm lens. Sounds like the 2.0 teleconvertor is a no-go, the 1.4 would be better with crop?

My Nikon 1.4 TC is literally married to my 200-500 on my D7100. The IQ loss is negligible.

Good to hear. Can you post a few pics?

200-500 and TC-14E III is the best match, if you don't have "D" lens need extender, must go for TC-14E III!

What about using the 1.4x and DX mode in your camera?

I shoot raw, shall not use any in-camera crop mode.

Agree.
I have trouble understanding why you would should an FX lens on an FX camera and then use crop mode. Just crop in post, if needed.

Shooting wildlife, for one. If a 500mm plus a TC still doesn't come close to filling the frame, why bother filling the memory card with data you're just going to toss out anyway? After all, many here like to tout 'get it right in-camera.....'

Sports is another one. Copping in-camera not only does the same, but having less data to write to the card greatly increases write speed and prevents the buffer from filling up as quickly.
