He has to break the nuts up as do all the smaller visitors to nut holders as they are designed so as to prevent choking as well as being fairly claw friendly. The woodpecker has a tongue designed to seek out grubs hidden below the bark of trees, whilst his green cousin tends to drill holes in the lawn seeking ants and leather-jackets in the grass - as I posted a couple of days before this one.
