I was cleaning the machine shop at Ramstien AB, Germany, trying to get out of there as fast as I could before they locked the base down.

I was home "sick" from school that day. I just wanted to stay at home and watch the launch from there. I sat in shock in the basement as they showed the images over and over again.

I was too busy wanting to be an astronaut myself at this point

I remember hearing about it a lot. (cuzzins, I was a Arkansanian when this happened. )

I don't remember all that happened but remember the hearings that followed

Later, I was angry that I wasn't born just a few months later so I could be born on the bicentennial year.

(funny story, i was watching ninja turtles, and they came on with breaking news about the war, and me and my brother were so worried that we were gonna get blown up, but my dad assured us it was a long ways away...so then we were just mad that our show was interupted)

Oh yes, and I couldn't quite believe it was happening at first!!! My son had just been born (the second, that is) and I was marvelling at the thought that he'd grow up never knowing there had ever been two Germanies, while at the time I was unable to imagine there had ever been and would from then on be again just one Germany...

Oh yes, and I remember it sooooooooooooooooo well!!!!!! We spent hours in front of my grandparents' black and white TV set (for they were the only ones to have one) soaking up every step of that mission, mostly so the 'small step for man but giant leap for mankind'!
