No, not necessarily a strike. If the pitch is thrown outside the lines of the base or to high or low ( and the batter does not swing) then it is called a 'Ball'. Four 'Balls' and the hitter gets to go to first base. If he swings and misses at any pitch, or if the ball crosses within the 'Strike' zone then it is called a Strike. Three strikes and the hitter is out.

In this picture batter made a mighty swing and missed...a STRIKE!
