My sister's hasband is a coin collector and on my visit for Xmas I brought my photographic gear with me for some shoots for his next history paper.
We shot many of his coins (closed up in his study to avoid my running nephews)
most of the coins we photographed where from hellinistic period in Minor Asia and India after Alexander the Great time. To tell the truth I don't remember the story he was telling me for each one of them..The was a history telling for each face and symbol every time he was handing me a coin

There were so many of them I liked.. I didn't want to narrow them more down...
Regarding the gear I used, besides the tripod, I small table and wireless trigger for the camera I used the ones below:
What seems to be a "plate" is DIY lighting surface I made up for small scale photoshots. It is a ceiling light with LEDs attached to a dimmer to control the amount of light. I used this to get a white background, to kill the shadows from my small table light and flash and to provide suficient light on all the edges of the coins.
The only lense I used was the 50mm 1,8D, reveresed for the small coins, and with an extra ring for the larger ones (normal mounting on the lense here). The focusing rails were necessary because everything was on manual (focus,exposure).
