is there any advantage to using a light meter that isnt built into a camera?
Absolutely! Ambient light reading from a good meter is the most accurate if used properly. It measures the ligh falling on the subject which is more accurate than the light reflected off the subject.
are there any that are under $150 and still worth using?
Look on E-bay for bargains. I bought a Minolta IV lightmeter for 120 bucks and it's worth every penny.
