Anyone ever get two filters stuck together?

On my lens I keep a UV filter on it all the time. Once in a while I put my CPL ontop of it. I have found theres a "sweet spot" when turning the CPL that sort of "unlocks" it from the UV filter. It may be my imagination or something, but I have tried to unscrew them as best as I could and then I would turn the CPL a little bit at a time and theres one point where it takes very little effort to unscrew them. I was surprised and thought I was the only one that experienced this. I'd say give it a shot.

DOH! Completely forgot my UV Filter has threads in the front.

Have been screwing/unscrewing UV and CPL depending on which one I want to use.

I guess a positive about being an idiot (me) is that I've not had to worry about them getting stuck

I don't stack filters...it increases the chance of lens flare and degrades image quality.

metals contract under cold water so run it under hot/warm water

if that doesnt work, put a peice of sandpaper in each hand and try to twist it off using the sandpaper.

I have some of these, IMO - they suck. Don't waste your money. I have never been able to break a filter loose with them.

Thanks for the input. I don't have them and have never used them. I have brass encased filters so I haven't had the problem. Saw them at a local photography shop thought I would toss it out.

Wouldn't you want them to contract? Seems to me, if the metals expanded (using warm water), they'd be tighter together?

Why would you want the metal to warp at all?

Besides that, to answer your question, cold = contract doesn't mean warm = expand. Well it does but since warm water probably won't be THAT FAR over room temp it won't make a big enough difference. Just don't go boiling your filters.

No, it's not gonna warp. But even the slightest expansion within the threads would make unscrewing them more difficult, not less.

So, I was all geared up to try the various suggestions here, and the freaking filters slid apart easily with the lightest of touches.

Looks like this suggestion:

I have found that if you use your fingers and put them EVENLY around it, then you have a better chance than just using two fingers or gripping it with your hand and trying to turn.

...from iflynething was right on the money. I was probably squeezing too hard.

Credit where credit is due.

Thanks to all,

Jon
