Anyone using a Nikon SD-8 power supply?

I am new to the forum and I am looking for anyone who can tell me about the Nikon SD-8 battery pack.

I just purchased a "mint" SD-8 on E-bay and it came in today. I do not have the user manual. The mint unit is not as it has the third (outermost) contact on the lid has corrosion on it over the #6 battery. Before I goback to the seller and make any complaint I need a couple of questions answered. (I have also submitted thses questions to Nikon USA.

1. What is the red indicator light at the top of the unit indicating? The light on my unit does not come on when loaded with batteries and connected to the flash.

2. Since I do not have a manual does anyone know where I can get one online, or would anyone be willing to photocopy one and send it to me?

3. (this my relate to question 1) How can I tell the unit is funtioning properly? The Flash it is attached to does not seem to charge any faster with the unit attached as when it is unattached.
