Apeture & Lens Question

Ok- if you have a lens that has a 3.5-5.6 range but I set my camera at F11 will the lens only shoot as high as 5.6? I'm totally confused here with this so if anyone has any explanations or sites to direct me to I would appreciate it!

When a lens says F3.5-5.6...they are referring to the maximum aperture. This would be a zoom lens, so the maximum aperture at the wide end of the zoom would be F3.5 and the maximum aperture at the long end would be F5.6.

You can still set the aperture smaller at any point in the zoom range. The minimum aperture is probably somewhere in the range of F22, F29 or smaller.

OK- so you can always go smaller, but the largest I can get at 55mm would be 5.6 and at 18 would be 3.5- got it, thanks mike for the quick response!
