well, white balance depends on what you want. And if you are shooting in raw, why bother? You basically create your ideal wb when you postprocess.

There is no "off" for WB. Raw doesn't use WB, just what the image sensor actually saw and recorded.

However, RAW converters like ACR will start by showing the RAW conversion "As Shot" which is whatever WB setting you had the camera set to when you released the shutter. It can be changed to any other preset, or specific light temperture in the converter.

Since the specifics vary somewhat from camera model to camera model, which focus mode you would use for various situations should be apparent from the information in the users manual and a bit of critical thinking.

Yes i use the preset kelvin values. Perhaps my software autoadjusts when i load an image. I've noticed a few can/do - UFRAW, Silkypix DS4. I gave up worrying otherwise.

Yes I agree that when shooting raw you dont necessarily have to white balance, but I use a white balancing reflector looking thing from lastolite and I love the turnout. Makes me not have to worry about it in post when it takes literally like one minute to get it right in camera. Plus I dont really trust AWB. could be just me.
