Automatic Capture of part of an image

want to be able to automatically capture part of an image I upload somewhere and have not yet found anything useful on the net for it.

The thing I want to do is this:
* Upload an image to my site
* Click on a point within it
* Have an area centered on this point (say about 100x100 pixels) automatically captured and stored as a 'thumbnail' of the larger image.

Just using a thumbnail of the whole image will not work too well as they are panoramic images and very long!

If anyone has any help or pointers I'd much appreciate it.

Well... I know it's not terribly helpful, but it may keep you from giving up hope... In my search for a photo-gallery program, I know I came across at least one that did allow you to do something along those lines. I can't recall what it was right now, but I'll keep an eye out for it and if I find it again, I'll try to let you know.

I don't know how comfortable you are with such things, but you can do that with ImageMagick and some JavaScript programming.
