Beginner purchase...

I'm buying a Nikon D50 kit with 28-80mm Nikkor ($599 from Ritz online). They are giving a $50 online gift card with purchase of a DSLR, and I'm planning on putting this toward a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. Most of my shots are family and sight-seeing pictures, so although a zoom would be nice, I assume the 80mm will be enough for now (120mm with 1.5x adjustment). In all, $669.94.

The prime sounds like a required lens from everything I've heard, and a longer zoom is more expensive (and probably a good Christmas present).

I'm also planning on picking up some UV filters for lens-protectors... this will add another $30, giving me 2 lenses for the same $700 I could have gotten the 18-55mm kit.

This is an expensive sport, but I'm trying to get into it slowly...

i have the same kit from the same place, however i paid alot more for it than you are..lol
its a good camera, and the lens is pretty good, i just broke down and bought a larger zoom a few weeks ago...

i tried the 55mm prime the other day and now i relly want it...lol

IMO its a great camera
