You'll be happy with it, I have the K110D, which is the same, minus the shake reduction, and it is a nice camera, well built, and no problems at all after almost 8,000 shots

For wildlife stuff that's not in a zoo, believe me you'll want at least a 300mm lens. I'm pretty sure I've seen Nikon D40 / 18-55 / 70-300VR combos for around the total price you're willing to spend. Check Adorama and B&H via the links at this forum.

You can go really nuts and git a Sigma 50-500 "Bigma", which is actually not a bad lens at all... and it has the added advantage of a HSM motor which focuses just fine on a D40...

True, a D40 looks a bit odd hanging off the bigma, but what the heck.
