I've sent a few pictures to a lab to have them blown up, but they seem to come out a bit dark, so now I have to over expose them slightly to compensate. I've found a site or two for monitor calibration, but it doesn't seem to help.

Any help or site recommendations would be appreciated, thanks!

Your monitor needs to show the same dynamics as your lab/printer so it's not much good calibrating it to any other standard. The lab may be able to give you a print of a gamma calibration chart and also the image file so you can load one into PS and adjust your monitor to match the hard copy.

If you can adust the gamma via your graphics driver, you may be able to load/save different settings for different labs/printers/etc.

Digital images are always going to look slightly different in terms of colour and contrast on other peoples monitors, because everyone is going to have their own set preference for gamma, contrast, brightness and darkness etc...
