i use a tamron 28-200 XR on one camera and i have a tamron 28-300 XR on another. i like both alot, but the 28-200 was alot less expensive and im pretty sure it has a closer focus distance.

I'm a student as well and I just picked up a Canon 75 - 300 lens from ebay for £106 about $288.... It's pretty damned good but when using it at full zoom you are gonna need a tripod because the camera shake is appalling if you hold it.

the tamron 28-200 is $270 at adorama and the 28-300 is $340

i dont really like quantaray lenses, the ones iv used on my nikons have never focused well it was almost like the lens couldnt keep up with the camera. and i think the quality is just a little lower.
