Was IR really neccessary to get this effect/feel? Or could it have been achieved without IR as well?

IR gives you a great range of tones for b/w. In the color version, the IR is very apparent, with the white hay bail, and the blue sky. But the color version didn't convey the same feeling.

IR stands for infrared. Aside from the b/w conversion in PS, the only other thing done was a slight vignette was added. There's lots of IR info on the web.
