How do you get the bird in flight ones? A ton of zoom or a ton of crop and editing?

I cropped it but just barely, and I was at max zoom, 250mm (which isn't much compared to others). Basically I just waited there. He came flying by a few times, then would fly away. So while I snapped other photos, I waited. Eventually he came back and flew over head. No secret, just some patience
