bace: I start by converting the image into b&w, since I mostly use color film. Then I see if the photo needs adjusted contrasts and stuff, which I fix with levels, brightness/contrast and/or curves. Depends. Then I usually dodge the photo a little using the dodge tool. Usually the corners and sky get dodged.. And then I just add a color balance layer with a slight touch of yellow on the highlights to remove that cold b&w feeling. It becomes a little warmer and gets another feeling.
I want to write a long tutorial about photo editing, and I probably will sometime.. If I do, I'll let you know. Will cover ALOT.
And I wanna do a remake of the first photo. But don't live near a lake or the sea.. And I don't have a model for it either.
