Breaking in the new camera

Hey guys, I recently upgraded from my 5 year old sony cybershot 4.1 to a Nikon D40. I can honestly say that i'm the uber noob of the moment. I thought i'd share a few shots with you guys for opinions (these were taken on auto (figured i'd work on basic skills first before i jump into changing settings) so please feel free to critique to your hearts content).

Need to get a polerized filter is my guess... any ideas?

In hindsight i guess color vibrancey as a post effect can be alot like crack. let's hope i can curb that habit.

If you're going to do some indoor photography, you'll need a hotshoe flash. The on-board one fails miserably. Once you get one, you'll see my point. They cost some moneys but they are definitely worth it.

Otherwise, the pics look nice but could use some straightening and brightness adjustments.
