Building a camera kit from scratch - which brand?

Asking for a friend. He wants to start taking photos somewhat seriously and currently just has a point and shoot. He's open to a DSLR or a mirrorless.

He asked me for advice on what to buy but since I only really know and shoot Nikon, I have no idea where to tell him to start with a new kit from scratch as I don't really know the offerings of other manufacturers.

He is willing to spend up to $2,000 on a camera and at least one nice lens. He's primarily wanting to shoot people, including posed and candid "street" stuff. Also some interest in landscapes.
