I guess I mostly agree with DScience.
Um I have the Nikon d60. I got it at best buy with an extra lens and extra battery. With the price match guarantee i got it for 760 all together. major score.

I hear there is not much difference between the d40 and d60 especially if you are a beginner dslr user.

There are refurbed D40's on Adoramas website for 320. Cheapest I see the D60 is about 150 more than that. I do not see a refurbed option for the D60. 550 for the D60 plus this absolutely must have 18-55 VR lens. This is versus plunking 320 for the damn near same camera, and instead investing in a 35MM or 50MM F/1.8 or any other lens that you can actually get creative with whose utility goes beyond "Oh sweet, now I can drunkenly shake my hands and it'll be slightly less blurry!"

Either camera is going to get the job done. One just give you a bit more latitude in investing in what REALLY matters - a lens.
