Camping snaps

I went camping for the weekend and natually took my camera along. It's a Nikon FE and i'm only just getting into the whole photo scene. Anyway i shot about 60 photos and selected a few to show here.

The first 2 pictures were shots of a rainbow lorekeet in a tree, although it was shot against the sky they actually worked out quite nicely, but my crappy scanner kind of dulled the colors a bit.

This photo was also butchered by my scanner it acutally has a beautiful yellow hue which was lost in the scan.

Once again same yellow hue, same crappy scanner!

This image was darkened in photoshop since it lost it's contrast during scanning, and the clouds were washed out. It was taken out of a car window so i was pleasently surprised. And a grand storm it was.

Once again lots of yellow was lost. I've never really photographed against the sun, and i don't have a light metre the camera's autoexposure did the trick.

This photo hardly did the sky justice. It's no where near as purple as it actually was. Pity. The original is slightly lighter (it's possible to pick 3 cows in the field).

Again color is off but it looked good to me. The tree in the right was an accident since i was just trying to take the picture while it was still there. I didn't have any time to set it up properly. But it worked out quite well. (also the black corners are my lens hitting the edge of a pole filter).

What do you think? And be critical i'm learning

However much we appreciate EVERYONES opinion here at the forums,

if your critique is not constructive or positive in some way...hold your tongue.

There ARE other ways to explain WHY a picture is lacking in interest.

Well done! I found the shots to be well thought out. plus you can't go wrong during the magic hour. Scanners can be a tricky deal. With some time (and photoshop). I trust you will be able to work it out. It comes down to how much info the device can record. Film scanners produce great results. The price is high, but it may be something to consider down the road.

Nice pics, I really like bird2.jpg it looks almost surreal. Like it was shot in a fantasy land or something. Really neat!

Hey ya aussie!

where these in glasshouse mountains, or bunya mountians? Just curious.

Actually, I really dig these photos I think all of them have potential mate! If you have photoshop, play around with the saturation for the lorikeet photo to their colours bright.

The cloud shots are really cool, try playing around with the levels to brighten them about and maybe some curves theres a cool tutorial on that here by voodoocat:

I really dig the storm pic, the clouds are fabulous and the lighting in the background is cool. Maybe make sure that horizon is level (you can rotate in photoshop - I constantly have to do this because my shots are always crooked!)

Actually there are some other good tips and trick in the photoshop forum of this site as well.

Thanks for the support. And ram is entitled to his opinion but why is it boring? Just the landscapes? It wasn't an exciting trip to say the least.

Craig i need a working scanner. As in a scanner which doesn't used nasty hacks and dodgy drivers and a cheap switchmode powersupply. In short it's stuffed and well due for an upgrade. The next one will definatly have a film scanner.

BigRC i hope you aren't refering to the fantasy land as the bit of a light glowing mess at the bottom of the picture, because that's mould growing on the bottom of the lens, just don't have the $70AUD to get it fixed atm. :?

And Vonnagy I thought it was the glasshouse mountains on the way down as well, except that we were going down so I knew better. I don't know what the mountains are called but we were at Morooka Lake / Dam 120ks south of Brisbane and about 20ks from Warrick. They are therefor not the glasshouse mountains.

both the feeling bitchy and realizing that the pics are better than all of mine.

altyfc's avatar is more inspiring than any of my shots.

i didnt particularly like the first two (the ones of the bird) but hopefully the real shot was a lot nicer. the sunsets were great.

iespecially liked the rays of God in that one shot took from your car

if it the color of the bird pic you mean then yes, the original is much better.
Does anyone have any good ideas for next time i'm shooting up into the sky? The pole filter was on but it didn't do much to the brightness of the sky because of the cloud cover and the suns position.

How else do you take a picture like that?
