ok, so im new and using a canon rebel xsi and my friend has a nikon and took this picture, does anyone know how i can take one like this?

Hi richboy, welcome to ThePhotoForum.

Since you're clearly stating that the photo in question is not yours but your friend's, I had to change it to a "link only" presentation. To avoid confusion, we've come to say "only put your own work onto display" (unless if is in the Off Topics and the image shows clearly that it was borrowed off some stock sites as adornment to some birthday-threads or so...).

The photo looks like your friend played around a little with creating a tonemapped photo out of three to five differently saved RAW files (comparing to three to five differently exposed photos), so he'd capture all the shadow parts and all the highlight parts at their best and thus increase the camera's light dynamics. (Though the sky seems not to have worked out really well...).

That photo has more to do with photoshop skills then camera skills.

He appears to be using HDR editing to flatten out all the lighting, and then a lot of paint over\compositing as well.
