An ancient tradition
The crossing of the river by canoe at the mercy of the ice dates from the beginning of the colony in the XVIIth century. It is the only way to cross the river between Quebec and Levis, if the ice bridge does not take. In the 1860s, over two hundred boaters, mainly from Levis, crossed people and goods. The steamers able to cross the field of ice will disappear the boatmen and this traditional practice at the end of the XIXe century.
It was during the Carnaval de Québec in 1894 that the first canoe race was organized.
This picture of the training team was taken in 1976 with a Pentax K 1000, a 50mm f2 and an Ilford Pan F 50 asa
