Hi there,

I got a Canon EOS Rebel XSi and wanna do some more portrait photos, the standard lense is really bad, so I was wondering which lense I should get and who wouldn't ruin me.

I got the Canon 430EX II flash.

I don't mind getting a brand which is not Canon, Sigma og Tamron maybe just fine.

Do you have any suggestions, what do you think about the 17-40 from Canon ?

Kind regards, Mette

Budget? I would recommend a prime since your subject is probably not in motion, use your feet for zoom! They give better quality and wider apertures and often better bokeh. The 50mm is an excellent lens. I personally have the F/1.4 version. It is my favorite lens so far. I love using shallow DoF.

the 17-40 is F/4 which is fairly slow, it depends in what lighting you will use it, i see you have a flash, so it really depends on how you shoot. I personally like to get as much natural light as possible without a flash, so I try to get lenses with as big apertures as possible.
