If you check out the "compared to..." section in the Sony review at the link Rob provided they do a direct image comparison between the cameras.
 
GO for Kodak color and get the P712 from Kodak I love My 850!
 
In terms of specifications and price they do seem to be fairly well matched, but personally I'd go for the Canon, for one reason that can be summed up in two words - Memory Stick. Sony insist on using their own memory card format, which is fine if you're only using Sony compact cameras, but not so good if you own another digital camera. You won't be able to switch memory cards between the Sony and another camera without an adapter. But if that doesn't bother you I couldn't say which would be better for you, and since the specs are so similar I'll give the same advice as always - go and hold them both in the shop, take a few shots (saving them to your own flash card/memory stick if you have one) and decide which feels right.
