There are some mechanical differences as well.. the Mk I is a 77mm filter diameter vs. the Mk II at 82mm. Also the Mk I is a reverse-zoom and the Mk II is a standard zoom. In a "reverse zoom" the lens focal length gets SHORTER as it's physical length gets LONGER (backward of what you'd expect).

Still, I own the Mk I and haven't upgraded. I find that I mostly shoot with my 70-200mm f/2.8 and I only just occasionally use my 24-70.
