I plan on buying a Canon DSLR for Christmas and my birthday is coming up in a month. I was wondering if anyone knew any good flashes for under $100 that is pretty good to start with. Thanks.....

You can get a Vivitar 285HV. I don't think you can (or should) use it on-camera, however. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong.

I use them for off-camera stuff and they are great.

It really depends on what capabilities you are looking for.

You can get a non-dedicated 'manual' or partially automatic flash for around $100. I'd suggest something like THIS.
Of course, you will need to adjust the flash and the camera separately, in order to get proper exposure.

It's usually a lot easier to use a dedicated flash. These will communicate with the camera for the purpose of flash metering...so it's pretty automatic for you to use. They are more expensive though.
