Hey guys,

I have the Rebel XT. Is it true that the shutter will only last for 50,000 cycles? I have had my camera for 2 weeks and have already taken about 2,000 pictures (mostly burst for action shots). Does that mean that I'll have a paperweight after a year?

Yes... and no....

Shutter ratings are just that... ratings...

Either way your camera wont be a paperweight... usually by the time you get near the shutter count you may have a new camera... or IF the worst happens and you blow a shutter... if its within the spec usually Canon will help you out on it... now really it can go either way... I sold my original 1D with 198,000+ clicks... and its still going strong at about 215k... my 1D Mark II blew a shutter at 15k... which of course Canon replaced for free... but just goes to show you that a blown shutter can happen really at any point...

How much are shutters to replace?

...They do replace the shutter, not the entire camera, right?

Depending on the camera... I have heard as low as $200... and as high as $400.... and yes... just the shutter assembly...
