Just a question: do you want a zoom or a telephoto? People often confuse the two. A zoom just means a lens that can change focal lengths. A telephoto is one that has a "long" focal length that can pull in a subject from a distance. There really aren't types of photography that require a zoom lens, but there are ones that pretty much require a telephoto, like bird and other wildlife shots, and many sports.
Most people do landscapes with a wide-angle. If you want a lens to try and cover everything, you will probably be spending a lot of money. You might want to get two or three if you want to do diverse subjects.
It would most likely be a telephoto lens as you thought. It will be used primarily for wildlife shots at this time. I'm going to invest in a wide-angle at some point.
