So it's a bit of a cliche and i'm not that experienced at portraits, but I wanted to try out my new 50mm f1.8

Add a reflector to camera right and focus on the near eye, and you'll have it made.

I did try a reflector actually, but it was a free one with a magazine and reflected hardly anything. What sort is recommended?

I suspect the one you have is fine, just so that it's large enough. Did you have it in close? If not, try moving it in so that it's just out of camera view.

I think the pose is OK. My only thought is to have her look at something SLIGHTLY closer to the camera so we see a bit less of the white of her eyes.
