A simple 5 dollar "Grey card" does the same thing. But I have heard mixed reviews about the expodisc and its reliability/accuracy.

a grey card does not do the same thing. a grey card is for exposure balance, while the expo disk is for color balance....two very different things. i just ordered an expo disk last week. it isn't in yet, so i can't comment from personal experience. however, all of the photographers i have spoken with love it....hence, why i bought one.
