The white balance is off

I'm tutoring a subject at uni this semester called Team Project where a group of 4 engineers are simply given a goal and have 13 weeks to make it. Well they are building a colorimeter. I had a lovely weekend of researching the very insane maths you need to get from the electronics to a point on the CIE 1931 chart, and really I don't envy them much.

This thing above looks much simpler.
