    This is a good family remembrance shot, in focus, clear, etc but it lacks a lot of the characteristics of a good portrait.

    Direct flash has washed out any interesting shadows, the pose is essentially straight-on and the background is unappealing and in focus.

    I agree with Traveler - an upward looking angle with a soft or interesting background would help.
