curios about d90?

Just as good as any other camera...

With the D90 you still have Auto mode and a bunch of defined presets (night, portrait, sports, etc). You can venture out as far as you'd like and still fall back on any of those modes if you get stuck.

I started with a D40, (still love that camera) but feel that the D90, although more bells and whistles, would be just as easy to learn on with the added benefit of growth potential.

N0YZE is right. It's a good camera with a lot of bells and whistles. Try in manual and see if you can stay in manual and not have to fall back on the modes. Learn aperature and shutter speed and what they do and why. Also, try to learn as much as you can about light. That is what it is all about, the light.

Shouldn't this thread be in "Digital Discussion Q&A" instead of "Film Discussion Q&A"?

yes. Also if you are going to post questions in the future, I would suggest giving a little bit more information than "beginner"
