So, I was (still am) planning on purchasing a D50 in the next month or so, and have been scouring the ads and websites for the BEST deal.

(staples.com had one for 404 WITH a lens, but it sold out)

However, I am noticing that slowly, the D50 is disapearing, being replaced by the D40! Even on Ritzcamera.com !

Is the D50 really DONE? Anyone know the story?

I managed to play with the D40 at Ritz. Don't take it too seriously - it simply isn't anything like the D50. The D50 feels like a trimmed down D80 while the D40 feels like a trimmed up point and shoot.

What's weird is that most of the major retailers still have the D50 in stock and on display where I live - many of which also do not have the D80!

I'm trying to think back over my 50 years of photgraphy to come up with a camera that wasn't eventually discontinued. I can't come up with one.

yeah, obviously... but I am shocked to see such a lovely camera leave without a direct replacement.

Does anyone KNOW that they are not making them?

I know that B&H still has them.

I did a quick search, I couldn't find anything to indicate that production is being phased out. Nikon still lists the camera on their website.
