I am using my D5100 for past 3 years without problem. Fortnight back I was shooting in Streets of Sandiego when suddenly a line started appearing between the photos. No dropping, no vibration. Nothing physically happened to the camera between the Good Image and the next Bad image. From that time the line is appearing in every picture. Photos are posted below.

Without Lens:

Higher the shutter speed, the separation becomes more prominent.

Note: If I switch to live mode, this anomaly is not occurring. Photos come good.

Please help me.

It's a shutter problem. In live view shutter is held open while shot is taken, in normal shooting the shutter moves.

Someone else might point a fix but I think this us a job for Nikon repair shop

your shutter is dead.

That's definitely not normal operation. Send it in to Nikon for repair.

repairing a d5100 wouldnt be worth it, you could buy a replacement body for less than the repairs. A used D5100 should be right around $250.

I was thinking the same thing actually. He might be better off to sell it on ebay for parts or repairs and use the money toward another used D5100 or maybe a D5200.

I'd want that 24MP sensor and EXPEED 3 if I was going to bother.

Thanks Everyone! New Nikon then.. I'm considering D5500 Body.

@KmH.. It is near Phoenix, Arizona near Tucson.

There is a lot of territory between Phoenix and Tucson.

BTW: how did you find an empty parking lot?

Maybe it's a mirror up delay.. try quite mode, maybe it will help

his shutter curtain is dead. probably the 2nd, and stuck halfway open.

Good excuse to get a D600 for a bargain.

I don't think you should get it repaired, I loved my D5100 for years as well. You would be better off just upgrading bodies I believe. I believe the current one is d5300
