D5100 with a new lens

I will be replacing my old 18-200mm lens with the newer Nikon 18-300mm. As I've read some reviews of the lens they refer to some distortion at the far end of the range but that newer cameras will automatically compensate for it. I have a D5100 that is about 5 years old. I'm wondering if I should replace this with the D5500 or the D5600 at this point to get better range from the new lens with the improved focus sensors. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can update the firmware in the D5100 so it has the 18-300 mm lens profile, if it doesn't already have the profile.

I use to own that lens. It was pretty darn cool.
