Hey there - not familiar with this camera and did some research for a friend of mine.

Friend of mine is getting started in photography and is looking to purchase a D5300 but is also contemplating the D5500. I researched both and honestly other than WiFi and touchscreen and I don't see any difference. ISO; mega pixels, sensor size, shutter speed - all the same. Am I missing something?

You say 5300 VS 5000 in the heading but 5300 VS 5500 in the text. The 5000 is an old model while the 5500's difference from the 5300 is primarily that the 5500 has a touch screen back and the 5300 doesn't. There are other technical differences. To me the touch screen would not be worth the money but that's me.

Skip the older D5000 and D5100 versions, if you can. Yes, they are good, but aging fast these days. The newer D5200, D5300 and D5500 (all 24 mpix) are the best way to go. Any of these are great and very very similar, in terms of image quality. The difference are just a few extra gadgets here and there...

The way I see it the D5500 is a glorified D5300.
If difference was 100$ then I'd say go for the D5500 but more then that and you can get the D5300

I had a D5000 back in the days. I honestly loved it... it was a mini D90/D300 for light days.

but for roughly the same cost the d5100 has a better sensor and better screen articulation.
