So I'm an amateur looking for a decent camera to start off with to replace my P & S. Looking into buying one of these used cameras, both are roughly in the same price range. Any thoughts on which to go for? I'm mostly going to be doing outdoor shots, but I do predict needing a flash occasionally.

These are some I found for sale in my area at decent prices:

If the D70 and the FZ30 are the same price, go for the D70! The D70 is a digital SLR which will allow you to mount and use many different lenses, flashes etc, while the FZ30 will limit you to its fitted lens. Perhaps more importantly although it has less megapixels the D70 has a larger sensor, the benefits of which become especially noticeable as you raise the sensitivity (ISO level).

Thanks guys. I think I am buying a used D70 for $425, but it comes with no lenses. Still a good deal?

hehe I'm a huge HGTG fan so your 'Do you know where your towel is" gave me a giggle.

No lenses with the camera shouldn't be a major issue; a standard kit lens or a 50mm prime should be reasonably inexpensive. (the former would give you a decent zoom range, the latter only one focal length but a much nicer lens).

Oh and glad someone recognised the reference... I'm sure there are others but maybe they're afraid of being revealed as a geek
Someone recently asked if I got the name from the movie... naturally that person is dead now

I'm a geek and damn proud! LOL! I liked the movie actually, I thought the actor who played Zaphod was dead on.

How much is the storage on this cam, as is? Should I invest in extra memory? Just wondering because there is the same cam for sale for $700 with 2gb memory and 50mm 1.8 lens.

There's no built-in memory at all like on compact models so you will definitely need a memory card. But: a 50mm f/1.8 and a 2gb card are not that expensive; $700 doesn't sound like a great deal to me. It would be cheaper to buy the used one and then get the lens and memory separately.

Going to buy a d70 from ebay. Any list words of wisdom??

Can you use normal memory cards on the d70? Like, the one from my P &S, will that work in the D70?

I'm looking at one without a lens kit, this one -http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330155936823&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014

How much will a decent lens cost me?
