In the times before it existed as a hiking and recreation spot, it was particularly treacherous to navigate as the vegetation is so thick; and the forest along the creek which runs through it forms a canopy and covers almost the entire place in shade and darkness -- somewhat unusual in an area (Marin county, California) dominated mostly by rolling hills.
