Was looking at a 75-300mm lens for the Olympus E620, and was wondering about tele-converters. I had one once and rarely used it; but are they worth it and what is the difference between them and say an extension tube?

It's a nice zoom lens so it seems a TC purchase on top of it probably wouldn't be necessary.
Thanks,
Paul

Very simple explanation -
TC makes your lens longer, extension tube lets you focus closer.

There is some loss of light that comes with the TC though...
And you'll usualy loose infinity focusing with the extension tube.

Also, while an extension tube has no glass, a teleconverter does. So the quality of a teleconverter is very important.

But, just as it is with lenses, some third party teleconverter can be excellent and cheaper.

If you have a cheap glass a tc gonna still create cheap looking images.

TC's will increase purple fringing, in general, no matter how wonderful they are. It's just a necessary trade-off. A TC will always degrade IQ, no matter how good your glass is, though you will naturally get better results with top-end glass and a TC over cheap glass. Another consideration is that as the TC increases in magnification, so to does the loss of light and aberrations. Many will chose a 1.4x TC over a 2.0x TC for this reason.
