Nice shot of the kid...

all of your problems you listed would be solved with a DSLR.

I can see right away you will get a huge improvement in image quality from your shot, you will get better detail and clarity.

what would be the most inexpensive way to go with a dslr & the right lens I would need?

Can I trust a used or refurbished camera body?

Since I use an SD card & have that card reader should I look for a camera that uses the same storage?

I don't want to spend so much money & then feel later like I made a wrong choice and I understand choosing a camera like this is really a personal choice but the pics I uploaded are typical for what I do most

If you want an advanced point and shoot, look at the Canon S5IS. Get it from a store with a good return policy.

A digital SLR would be nice. D40, D60, D80. Get any of them with the VR lens kits, Nikkor lenses only. Nikon has the body with the standard zoom and the longer zoom (70-300mm or something like that).

Well in general, a DSLR will have more potential to give better pics, technically speaking, one of the main reasons being the larger and more advanced image sensors, processors, ability to attach way better lenses, etc. Of course you have to know how to use it, but, in general I think it's safe to say a DSLR will produce better pics than a P&S.

lol.. thanks for the technical side.. but i was asking the OP for her opinion in helping her make up her own mind.
