Does Anybody Do This?

I've read a ton of posts on TPF about word-of-mouth marketing, business cards, etc.

I'm curious, though... has anybody used a good ol' fashioned sales letter as a way of marketing your business? And if you did, was it successful? Or a waste of money?

my cheapest method was email, it took a while though, I looked through yellow pages for E addresses of local businesses and sent them all a flyer for a portrait session, including an image, cost zero, took a months bookings and made a few bob.
