doubt about dSLR

I find it weird that they say that it's a reflex camera. From the look of it, the viewfinder is more like a rangefinder and the lens just goes straight to the sensor. Why are they using a mirror for?

I don't know how well it works but I've seen a product that slides over the eyepiece of the viewfinder and has a small (about 1.3 inch) LCD screen that swivels for above or below shots.

EDIT: this was posted above in a link, sorry

Thank you so much for ur reply.

The digilux 3 is mostly a panasonic and this is the twin (and a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER $1200-1500)

It is adopting the 4/3rds mount from Olympus and Leica has a few optics they designed for their system.

sarcastic eh?
my probelm is that i need a high performance cam, at most of the time i need it to hold it above my head, in a crowd, and shoot.
....

I'm trying to understand how an LCD preview screen would be of any help when holding the camera above your head.

Get a wide angle lens then set it to infinity and anything from about 10 feet (depending on how wide) to way beyond the moon will be in good focus and snap away!

I think if they got rid of viewfinders I'd be screwed...
How do you take handheld pics at 300mm without stabilizing the thing with your noggin?

Both the Nikon D300 and D3 have live preview.

Cameras have been without live view for a loooooooong time and people have been taking pictures successfully without them. What you see is what you get, no matter if your face is pressed to the eye piece or at hand's length.

Now if you have a legitimate reason, thats different... sorry I do not understand the whole fear factor thingy.
