At least photography is helping me with my abysmal knowledge of wildlife...

Not a great time of day for bird photos. Sun is a little too harsh still and losing out details such as the eye. Sometimes under and over exposing (using your EV setting on the D40) can help bring out more details depending if the bird is bright white or really dark.
Other than that - good creative eye, nice photos. Sorry for being too critical...

Thanks for the CC PushingTin. I actually like the sun, and the shimmering water it gives, that's what I mainly like about the photos. Admittedly some detail has been lost though.

Anyone else?

I'm not a fan of the shots with the coots in the complete middle of the shots, and I'm sorry but I'm not a big fan of the lighting here either to harsh for my tastes.

Fair enough. People seem to think the lighting is too harsh after all.

I agree with the above. I find nothing appealing about really bright shots with birds that are way too dark. A different time of day would definitely be better.
