The master of imitation, the origin of sex in the flower world,.. the DOF and tonal range are nice, I think maybe the focus could be deeper - hard to tell at web rez. Nice!
I find this shot oddly disturbing. The reason for it is because the subject matter is a flower and normally very white/pink/red... The digital treatment completely changes the mood and gives off almost an ominous vibe. It takes the natural shape and structure of the flower and makes it look like bones. When you add the desaturation (hey, there's an oxymoron - ha!) the feeling of something ominous is increased.
As far as creating an emotion, and trying to make a statement, the photograph is successful. It's this emotion that is bothering me, not the technical treatment. This is a personal choice.
I'd love to know what you, the photographer, had intended with this image.
